ALISON BOSHOFF: Will The Crown writer Peter Morgan now tackle the story of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson in a new Netflix series?

Crown writer Peter Morgan was thrilled and relieved, as was the entire cast, when the Netflix show finally came to an end last year after six blockbuster series.

The latter two were particularly controversial, as the narrative of the Queen's reign reached the modern era and took some (more) historical liberties, causing a stir.

Immediately after the last broadcast, Morgan insisted that he was done with the royal family, but I hear there has since been a change of heart.

Insiders say the 60-year-old remains intrigued by two true stories he may yet decide he wants to tell: the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936, to marry the divorced Wallis Simpson; and the story of Queen Mary, wife of George V.

The idea would be to make a miniseries, or a couple of them, again for Netflix. I've heard that Morgan is working with one of The Crown's senior producers, although at this point it's all informal: no contracts have been signed or any deals finalized.

A source says: "Everyone felt a bit traumatized when we got to the end of The Crown, but Peter is kicking around a couple of ideas again and we'll see where he ends up."

The abdication of King Edward VIII after a reign of only 325 days was announced in a BBC broadcast. He told his subjects: "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and fulfill my duties as King as I would like to do without the help and support of the woman I love."

Simpson was a twice-divorced American socialite and the King's infatuation with her sparked a constitutional crisis. But the other story that intrigues Morgan is that of Edward's mother, Queen Mary.

She was initially engaged to her cousin, Prince Albert, second in line to the throne, but who died during a flu outbreak. The following year she became engaged to her brother, George, who became King George V.

As queen consort, she instituted a campaign of austerity at Buckingham Palace during the First World War. Her youngest son, John, died in 1919. He suffered epileptic seizures and was kept out of public view, to the point that he did not attend his father's coronation. He died when he was only 13 years old.

However, while a friend of Morgan's confirmed that he is considering these new true stories, he added that "for the immediate future he will be focusing on several different projects."

Morgan has also been spending time with his girlfriend Gillian Anderson, who played Margaret Thatcher on the show, in Morocco, where she has a house.
